Huroof-e-Madd &
Huroof-e-Leen

Learn the three Madd letters, the two Leen letters, their conditions, counts and Quran examples.

This complete lesson shows how Alif, Waaw and Yaa lengthen a vowel, how Waaw and Yaa become letters of Leen, and how to avoid confusing a true Madd with a soft sound.

Three natural Madd patterns
بَاAlifFatha + ا
بُوWaawDamma + وْ
بِيYaaKasra + يْ

In their basic form, these patterns produce Madd Tabee‘i: one Alif, or two vowel counts.

Start with the sound

What are Huroof-e-Madd?

Letters that extend a vowel

Madd (مَدّ) means extension or lengthening. Huroof-e-Madd are the letters that carry a long vowel when their required preceding vowel is present. They are Alif ا, Waaw Sakinah وْ, and Yaa Sakinah يْ.

A short Harakah lasts briefly. A basic Madd sound continues for two vowel counts. The consonant before the Madd letter begins the syllable; the Madd letter extends its vowel smoothly without a break.

The Madd letter itself normally carries no vowel sign. Its identity depends on both the letter and the Harakah immediately before it.

Madd Tabee‘i: the natural length

When a Madd letter is not followed by Hamzah or an original Sukoon that creates another Madd category, the result is generally Madd Tabee‘i, also called Madd Asli or natural Madd.

Its standard length is two counts. One useful teaching comparison is the time needed to open and close a finger at a moderate pace, but rhythm should ultimately be learned from a qualified teacher.

Later lessons explain why Hamzah, Sukoon, Shaddah or stopping can change the permitted or required length.

وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا

“And recite the Quran properly in a measured way.”

Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4
Three letters • three conditions

The three Huroof-e-Madd

Alif Maddiyyah

اFatha before Alif

Alif becomes a Madd letter when the letter before it has Fatha. Alif does not carry its own Harakah in this pattern.

قَالَ

qāla — the Qaaf’s Fatha extends through Alif.

Open the long aa evenly. Do not add a Hamzah sound at the end of the Alif.

Waaw Maddiyyah

وْDamma before Sakin Waaw

Waaw becomes a Madd letter when it is Sakin and the preceding letter has Damma.

يَقُولُ

yaqūlu — Damma on Qaaf extends through Waaw.

Round the lips smoothly. Do not pronounce Waaw as a separate consonant after the long vowel.

Yaa Maddiyyah

يْKasra before Sakin Yaa

Yaa becomes a Madd letter when it is Sakin and the preceding letter has Kasra.

قِيلَ

qīla — Kasra on Qaaf extends through Yaa.

Keep the long ee steady. Avoid turning it into a consonantal “y” sound.

Memorise the pairs: Fatha + Alif, Damma + Sakin Waaw, and Kasra + Sakin Yaa. A letter alone is not enough; the preceding Harakah completes the Madd condition.
Read the pattern, not just the letter

How to identify a Madd letter

1

Find Alif, Waaw or Yaa

Locate the possible Madd letter in the word. Alif normally has no Harakah; Waaw and Yaa must be Sakin for the basic long-vowel pattern.

ـَا · ـُوْ · ـِيْ
2

Check the preceding vowel

Look one letter back. Fatha matches Alif, Damma matches Waaw, and Kasra matches Yaa. A different preceding vowel may make Waaw or Yaa a consonant or a letter of Leen.

3

Check what follows

If no Hamzah or original Sukoon follows, read the natural Madd for two counts. If a cause follows, identify the relevant rule before deciding the length.

4

Keep the sound continuous

Lengthen the vowel without pulsing, shaking, changing pitch artificially, or inserting a hidden consonant. The two counts should be balanced across your recitation.

What are Huroof-e-Leen?

Waaw Leen

خَوْف

Waaw Sakinah preceded by Fatha is a letter of Leen. The sound moves softly from the open Fatha toward Waaw, similar to the aw movement in khawf.

It is not Waaw Maddiyyah because the preceding letter has Fatha instead of Damma.

See Surah Quraysh 106:4

Yaa Leen

بَيْت

Yaa Sakinah preceded by Fatha is also a letter of Leen. The sound moves gently from Fatha toward Yaa, similar to the ay movement in bayt.

It is not Yaa Maddiyyah because the preceding letter has Fatha instead of Kasra.

See Surah Quraysh 106:3
In connected reading: a Leen sound is soft and brief; do not automatically stretch it like Madd Tabee‘i. When stopping and an incidental Sukoon occurs after the Leen letter, a permitted Madd al-Leen length may apply. Learn its choices in Types of Madd.

قِيلَYaa MaddiyyahLong ī for two countsYaa is Sakin and preceded by Kasra.
بَيْتYaa LeenSoft ay movement in WaslYaa is Sakin but preceded by Fatha.

Waaw and Yaa can be consonants

If Waaw or Yaa carries its own Harakah, it is generally acting as a consonant rather than a Madd or Leen letter. For example, the Waaw in وَعَدَ begins with Fatha and the Yaa in يَدٌ begins with Fatha.

Alif has no Leen form

Huroof-e-Leen are only Sakin Waaw and Sakin Yaa preceded by Fatha. Alif is a Madd letter when preceded by Fatha, but it is not listed as a separate Leen letter.

Common mistakes with Madd and Leen

Reading Madd as a short vowel

Avoid: making قَالَ sound like a word with only short Fatha.

Correct: give the Alif its two-count natural length.

Stretching every Waaw or Yaa

Avoid: treating every written Waaw and Yaa as a Madd letter.

Correct: first check Sukoon and the preceding vowel.

Treating Leen as ordinary Madd

Avoid: automatically holding خَوْف or بَيْت for two counts during Wasl.

Correct: keep the Leen movement soft; consider stopping rules separately.

Uneven or vibrating length

Avoid: pulsing the voice, changing pitch repeatedly, or using different two-count timings within one recitation.

Correct: sustain a clean, even vowel at a stable pace.

Madd and Leen practice exercises

1

Short versus long

بَ / بَا · بِ / بِي · بُ / بُو

Make each long form clearly twice the basic short-vowel timing.

2

Name the condition

قَالَ · قِيلَ · يَقُولُ

Before reading, say which preceding vowel makes each letter Madd.

3

Contrast Madd and Leen

قُو / خَوْ · قِي / بَيْ

Listen for the steady long vowel in Madd and the soft glide in Leen.

4

Read in context

Choose one short passage, mark every possible Alif, Waaw and Yaa, then classify it before reciting. Record yourself and check the count with a teacher.

Frequently asked questions

What are the three Huroof-e-Madd?

They are Alif preceded by Fatha, Sakin Waaw preceded by Damma, and Sakin Yaa preceded by Kasra.

How many counts is natural Madd?

Madd Tabee‘i is read for two vowel counts when no additional cause changes its category.

Are every Waaw and Yaa Madd letters?

No. Their own sign and the preceding Harakah determine whether they are Madd letters, Leen letters or consonants.

What are the letters of Leen?

They are Waaw Sakinah and Yaa Sakinah when preceded by Fatha.

Is Leen always stretched?

No. During Wasl it is normally a soft glide. A permitted extension may appear when stopping creates an incidental Sukoon after it.

What is the difference between Madd Asli and Madd Far‘i?

Madd Asli is the basic two-count natural extension. Madd Far‘i is a secondary extension caused by Hamzah or Sukoon and has further categories.

Can I measure Madd by seconds?

Counts are relative to the recitation pace, not fixed seconds. Keep them proportionate and consistent.
